ETAPAS DA AQUISIÇÃO DA CAPACIDADE DE INFERIR ESTADOS MENTAIS NO DESENVOLVIMENTO DA PSIQUE INFANTIL

Resumo

A capacidade de inferir estados mentais de outros seres humanos, também denominada “habilidade Teoria da Mente” (ToM) ou “mentalização”, objetiva primariamente a previsão do comportamento de terceiros, além de ser recrutada na compreensão do discurso verbal e na compreensão da linguagem pragmática. O objetivo deste artigo é apresentar as fases de amadurecimento da capacidade de inferir estados mentais em humanos ao longo do neurodesenvolvimento até os seis anos de idade, quando a maioria das crianças saudáveis apresenta bom rendimento em tarefas desenvolvidas para a mensuração das habilidades ToM. Foi realizada uma busca na base eletrônica PubMed por artigos em português ou inglês, utilizando-se a frase de busca “Theory of Mind” [Mesh] and “Growth and Development” [Mesh], no período compreendido entre 01/01/1990 e 31/12/2012. A busca resultou em 96 artigos, dos quais foram selecionados 21 por tratarem diretamente do tema em questão. Referências consideradas importantes encontradas na leitura destes manuscritos foram incluídas. O desenvolvimento da habilidade ToM inicia-se muito cedo na criança saudável, tendo como principais substratos outras funções cerebrais pré-existentes, como a percepção visual de movimento, atenção visual compartilhada, detecção de intencionalidade, imitação e a habilidade de representar ações objetivo-dirigidas.

ABSTRACT

The ability to infer other humans’ mental states, also named “Theory of Mind ability” (ToM) or “mentalization”, primarily aims at the prediction of others’ behavior, in addiction to be recruited for the comprehension of verbal speech as well as for the comprehension of pragmatic language. Objective: to present the stages of maturation of the ability to infer mental states in humans throughout the neurodevelopment until six years old, when the majority of healthy children shows good performance in tasks designed to measure the ToM abilities. Methods: An electronic search was performed on the PubMed database for articles in Portuguese or English, using the search phrase “Theory of Mind” [Mesh] and “Growth and Development” [Mesh], between 01/01/1990 and 12/31/2012. Results: The search resulted in 96 articles, 21 of which were selected by directly addressing the subject in question. Important references found after reading these manuscripts were additionally included. Discussion: the development of ToM ability has an early onset in healthy children, and preexisting brain functions such as visual perception of movement, joint attention, intentionality detection, imitation and goal-directed-actions-representation capabilities may be its main substrates.
